We are here to assist anyone who wants to manage their land for conservation. We can manage the whole project from start to finish or provide services for any individual aspects of a project. If you are interested in any of the services we provide then please contact us.
Common-land consultancy: Having managed commonland over the past 15 years, we have gained considerable experience in how to manage these sensitive sites both in terms of practical management and faciltating public participation. Our emphasis is upon assisting local people to manage their own site by providing training, mechanical and grazing facilities if required. We act as a catalyst for other commons across the Chilterns.
Fencing (electrical and permanent): We have considerable experience in using electric fencing and can install a tailor made system suitable for your individual requirements. We also install permanent post and wire/rail fencing to a high standard.
Fence training; installation and maintenance: We deliver training courses, for groups of people or individuals, in how to set up an electric fence and keep it stock proof.
Grazing animal provision and water supply (both permanent and by bowser): We supply sheep and cattle to meet your grazing needs and if required we can provide a water supply. We provide stock-watchers or can train your volunteers or staff. We are on hand to deal with any problems.
Stock-watcher training:Stock on any site must be checked regularly. We deliver training courses, for groups of people or individuals, in stock-watcher training; what to look out for and how to deal with minor problems.
Animal movements: We have the facilities to move animals to and from your site and can deal with all the legal paperwork that goes with it. If you hire grazing animals in electric fence paddocks, we can periodically move them as and when it is needed.
Sheep shearing: We shear, foot trim, drench and dag small flocks of sheep (including hobby flocks).
Scrub clearance and bracken control: We clear scrub using brushcutters and chainsaws and remove bracken using a flail mower collector.
Tree felling and mobile sawmilling: We can remove wood off site if necessary, turn brashwood into useful faggots and process wood into firewood or planks.
Wild flower and grass seed provision and wild flower meadow restoration: Using green hay from donor sites (as locally as possible), we begin the process of reversion to flower meadow.
Hedge planting: We will supply or transplant saplings of hedgerow species (such as hawthorn and blackthorn) for your new hedge.
Hay making: Our speciality is making traditional, small, rectangular bales from small fields. This can either be used locally, sold or used as a seed bank for other areas.
Pond creation and restoration: Clean water countryside ponds are invaluable for wildlife. In recent decades many have been lost or abandoned. We restore neglected ponds and create new ponds on suitable sites. In 2002, Robin won the Chilterns Conservation Award for the restoration of a pond at Turville Heath.
Flail mower collecting and Topping: Using the flail mower large areas can be cut to an adjustable sward height and all the cuttings are collected, providing silage or compost material (depending on the quality of the field).
Grant applications: Including Entry Level Stewardship (ELS) and Higher Level Stweardship (HLS) bid writing.
Presentations: On topics including; using grazing livestock for conservation, traditional skills for sustainable land use and Turville Heath Common - a case study.
Ecological surveys including Farm Environment Plans (FEPs): We regularly carry out surveys in many locations throughout the UK, both for the general interest of the landowner and in preparation for funding applications. We carry out full ecological surveys, encompassing flora and fauna.
